Most children love to cook, and allowing
them to help in the kitchen gives them
advance training for school and opens
up a world of possibilities for their future.

There are some very basic rules to
remember when allowing your children
in the kitchen:

BE CAREFUL Always teach your child
to ask you before starting a recipe,
most recipes have at least one step that
children should not be allowed to
complete on their own.

It is a good idea to set up a recipe file
specifically for your children of the things
they are allowed to make without your
assistance.

BE CLEAN Cooking can be a great
deal of fun, but if your kids leave you a
big mess, you could end up banning
them from the kitchen, teach your
children to clean up their mess as they
go, it will make life easier for you and
them.

BE READY What ingredients does the
recipe call for, do you have them on
hand, and can your child exchange an
ingredient for something else? It is
common to change ingredients, be
aware of which ones are
interchangeable.

You, as the parent can answer most of
their questions. If all of the ingredients
are not available, plan a shopping list
for you and your child to take to the
store.

BE ACCURATE Measuring is
important, teach your child to pay
attention to how much the recipe calls
for, if there is a question, be there to
answer it for them.

Liquid measurements should always be
poured into a glass measuring cup and
read from the side, while the cup sits on
the counter.

Dry measurements should be leveled in
a dry measuring cup; again, you should
be prepared to answer any questions
they have.

Always remember that this is a new
experience for them, if you make it
enjoyable you could easily end up with a
chef on your hands, or not! How nice
would that be in the future when you dont
feel like cooking?
