It is so important for children to
have healthy snacks after school,
and having a group of things that
they are allowed to make increases
their self confidence and
strengthens their independence.
Having foods that they can prepare
often involves a little extra work
for you, but creates a safe
situation for them.
Coming up with cute names for
these foods help peak a childs
interest, at least the younger
ones:
*Ants on a Log requires mom to
keep cut celery on hand, the
children spread peanut butter on
the celery, and sprinkle with
raisins.
*Tuna Cones are simply tuna
sandwiches made in flat bottomed
ice cream cones.
*Juicy orange rounds are peeled
oranges sliced into rounds; mom
squirts a little lemon juice on
the rounds the night before, after
school the kids just take them out
of the refrigerator and sprinkle
with sugar.
*The graveyard is also fun at
Halloween time, toast two slices
of bread, cut one slice into 4
pieces, cut four slices in the
other slice and stand the
headstones up in the slots and
sprinkle with sugar. (Mom can
make this safer by cutting the
slices into the bread the night
before.)
*Walrus Salad, Mom can supervise
the kids preparation of this the
night before, peel, core and dice
two red apples, squirt with lemon
juice (this keeps them from
turning brown) chop 2 stalks of
celery, chop ½ cup of shelled
walnuts to bite size pieces (you
can also put the shelled walnuts
in several paper bags and walk on
them, this chops them up really
good). Put walnuts, apples,
celery, raisins and mayonnaise
into a large bowl and mix.
*Frosted cone cakes, kids love
this, follow the directions for
making cupcakes on the cake mix
box, instead of pouring into
cupcake tins, pout into flat
bottomed ice cream cones. Set
cones into muffin tins and make
for 30 minutes. Allow them to
completely cool then allow the
kids to frost them; this is
another great Halloween treat that
kids enjoy decorating.
The important thing in this is to
allow kids to make their own after
school treats, all of you can
enjoy it and it is a great way to
spend time with your children.
